Preschool children have been learning about Mental Health.  They have time each morning to stop, think about how they are feeling and then self register on our Colour Monster.  The Colour Monster is a monster who has lots of different feelings.  After this we walked around the parameter of the school playground to try and walk a mile.  When we first started we could only manage half a mile.  By the end of the week the children have walked a full mile.  What superstars they are!

Supertato Carnival Catastro Pea

This week in Nursery, we have been sharing the story 'Supertato Carnival Catastro Pea' from the Supertato series of books. The children used their gross motor skills to spread different coloured paints over sheets of paper on the floor using large mark making tools. Practitioners then drew various shapes on the painted paper for the children to practice cutting along the lines to increase their scissor skills. The multi-coloured shapes were then used to create Carnival bunting which we displayed around the room. The children have also joined in with a Carnival parade, each choosing a musical instrument to play along to party music whilst marching around the room! In addition to this, they have had the opportunity to create tie-dye patterns using twisted wet-wipes and felt tip pens and they have been mixing their own paints, exploring the different colours that can be made by combining them. The children have also been making some exciting Easter surprises this week and have received some special treats to take home too!

Run Veggies Run

The children have used these to practice their gross motor skills and they have been practicing their Superhero strength by doing some weight lifting using weights that they helped to create with poles and balloons. They have also done some potato printing, talking about colour-mixing, shape, size and patterns. And they have been creating some special Superhero surprises for their Mummies too! In addition to this, the children have had the opportunity to explore a Spring themed sensory tray and some chocolate gloop with animals to make marks. We had lots of fun filling and emptying various containers with the rice, lentils and split peas. We talked about the sounds that the various dried items made when sprinkled or poured, and the gloop got extra messy with smiles all round! The children have continued to enjoy dressing up as Superheroes to act out the Supertato stories they are becoming familiar with.

This week in Nursery, we have been focussing on a different 'Supertato' story. The children have helped to set up a Supermarket in the role play area using real vegetables and have been encouraged to use their imaginations to recreate the story using the vegetables and the different props available to them.  They also had the opportunity to think and talk about different weights using a set of scales to put the vegetables into. The children used pieces of pasta to measure vegetables, discussing which vegetables took more pasta to measure and which took less. In addition to this the children have mashed potatoes using mashers and have been learning new vocabulary such as "squash" "squeeze" "mash". We created a gym for the children to use, giving them the opportunity to practice their throwing and catching skills using balls and beanbags. In addition to this the children have designed their own Superhero capes and created pictures of Supertato by printing with potato mashers.

A Special Gift from Lidl

This week the children in Nursery and Pre-School have received a donation of two child size shopping trolleys from Lidl supermarket.  These type of resources are invaluable to our imaginary play areas as they can really support our children’s learning and promote many language opportunities.  The children have already put the trolleys to good use and are enjoying them tremendously.  A very big thank you to Lidl supermarket for these wonderful resources.
