Avalon makes the grade!

Diabetes UK representative, Mr Ken Herbert, joined us for a very special assembly this morning to present Avalon School with the ‘Good Diabetes Care in School Award.’

The award was presented as part of the 'Type 1 Diabetes, Make the Grade' campaign which aims to create opportunities for all schools and parents around the country to share good practice and get support from those schools who are Good diabetes Care School Award holders. We are very proud that Avalon School is now on the North West’s ‘Wall of Honour’ as one of only two schools on the Wirral, who hold this important award.

Mr Herbert congratulated the school staff on achieving the award and said, ’It is clear to see that you are a very caring school and that is why you have gained this award. It shows how much you care about children and how you look after them so well.’ Mr Herbert explained some of the signs and symptom of having Type 1 Diabetes, to the children and what to look out for, including his stock of ‘Jelly Babies’ that he carries everywhere!

Every three minutes, there is someone in the UK being diagnosed with Diabetes. To raise awareness, improve care and help fund further research into the condition, Avalon School are getting involved with World Diabetes Day 2016 on Monday 14th November. The children are keen to share their ideas and suggestions on how we can mark this special day in school. So far we have had a variety of ideas such as wearing onesies, dressing in blue or having a talent show!
