Children are welcomed into the Reception class at the start of the academic year in which they celebrate their fifth birthday. The Reception staff Miss Hardy and Miss Bennett encourage strong links with parents to ensure school is an extension of the home.

In Reception, the principles that form the basis of your child’s education are to provide a happy, friendly and stimulating atmosphere where we can motivate and encourage your child in the learning process. By offering a wide range of activities we aim to discover and develop the particular strengths of each child and build upon their independence to explore all curriculum areas. Each child’s learning journey is very individual at this age as they develop at different stages over this year.

There is a natural flow from the Nursery into the Reception Class. Children continue to enjoy carefully structured play activities within the classroom and have plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoor environment. All children will read, write and use numbers each day to develop independent writing skills. We follow the guidelines of the EYFS.

Specialist teachers enhance their development in weekly computing, PE, Music and Spanish lessons.

Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1 at Avalon is made up of two classes: Years 1 and 2.  Within Key Stage 1 we work with every child to reinforce and build on the skills they have developed in the Foundation Stage. The emphasis throughout the infants is to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in a range of key subjects whilst providing each child with opportunities to develop independence, self-confidence, self-discipline and self-esteem.

Our aim is to make learning a relevant, engaging and enjoyable process and one in which wide ranging skills are developed.  Each individual is supported to reach their full potential in all areas of our broad curriculum.

Specialist Teaching and Activities

The children in Infants benefit from specialist teaching in Music & Drama, Spanish and PE, with two PE lessons per week

Children are also able to enjoy a range of extra curricular as well as tuition in musical instruments including violin, piano, guitar and drums, and the opportunity to perform in the school’s Songsters choir.

The curriculum is brought to life with trips and visits taking place throughout the school year.
